There is a theory that the reason why offering o-hagi on the far shore became a standard practice is because azuki beans are believed to ward off evil and to wish for longevity and immortality. Also, since the sugar used for o-hagi was a luxury ingredient, offering it to the ancestors seems to be a way of expressing gratitude.
